How to Be as Effective as Possible with Facebook

We’ve dogged on Facebook quite a bit and mentioned how it’s not something you should rely on too much.

Now, this obviously doesn’t mean you should abandon Facebook. It is a vital and valuable tool for businesses, especially businesses like yours that rely on social media sales.

So in addition to what we’ve mentioned about utilizing other tools to help boost your Facebook presence, here are some other tips on how to maximize your Facebook reach.

1. Avoid Posting Non-Facebook Links

Whenever possible, try to avoid posts that include links taking people away from Facebook.

The Facebook algorithm has tended to penalize these types of posts (although the same isn’t true about posts with links that take people to other Facebook content).

One way to “get around” this limitation is that if you’re wanting to post a link outside of Facebook (such as to your consultant site), you can say something like “Check out the link below” and put the link in the comments.

2. Keep Engagement Up in Your Facebook Group

If you want more people to see your posts, you’ve got to keep your group members engaged and interacting.

Facebook will not likely show people your posts if those people are not interacting with the group.

The more interaction you have, the more it will tell the Facebook algorithm that people are interested in the group, so people will be more likely to see posts.

So be sure to do what you can to keep engagement up! Post jokes, quizzes, funny/emotional stories, questions, games, even political comments – Anything that gets people to respond.

If you notice particular people haven’t been active, you can even tag them (for example, “@Rachel, I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts on this?”).

You want to particularly get people engaged within the first 24 hours that they join your group. So as soon as they join, tag them and ask them an easy question to encourage them to interact (for example, “Welcome to the group, @Ashley! What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?”).

And with all of this, BE GENUINE! Genuinely care about people, be interested in their thoughts and feelings, and strive to give them a fun and valuable experience.

3. Get Likes, Comments, and Shares

This goes along with the previous point, but is especially important for particular posts that you want people to see.

Facebook won’t be likely to show a particular post to people if the post isn’t getting much interaction – likes (and other reactions), comments, and shares.

That’s another reason why you want to post things that encourage people to interact, particularly when doing your live sales.

In your live videos, you can ask questions, run contests, or offer incentives for people to respond to help garner more interactions.

Here are some examples of things you can say during your video to encourage likes, comments, and shares:

  • As soon as viewers get on the video, you will see their name come up on your screen, so you can say something like, “Hi, Victoria! Thanks for joining! Please like this video if you can, and let me know if you have any questions!”
  • At least once but preferably several times during your video, you could say, “Comment hashtag-live if you’re watching this live with me tonight, or comment hashtag-replay if you’re catching the replay!”
  • If you’re willing to run some sort of drawing, you could say, “If you share this video you’ll be entered into a drawing for some free items!”

4. Respond to All Comments

Anytime someone does comment on any of your Facebook posts, make sure you respond!

This helps encourage more activity on your posts and in your groups.

And when possible, try to respond with questions to help keep the conversation going. The more back-and-forth you can get, the better!

Hopefully these tips are helpful for getting the best use out of Facebook for your jewelry business!

Which one of these tips can you try implementing today?

Why You Need to Stop Relying on Facebook

You probably realize the importance of live Facebook sales for your jewelry business.

But you may run into this common problem: You go live and only a few people show up (or none at all).

What gives?

One of the causes of a lack of turnout to your live sales could likely be attributed to poor reach.

The average reach rate for a business post on Facebook may be around 6%.

This means that even if you have a Facebook group of 1,000 people, when you do a live video in that group, only 60 people would even see it (not including people who may see it through shares or through your public Facebook page). Out of those 60, probably only 5% would actually watch the video. In this example, then, that leaves only 3 people viewing your live sale.

Simply growing your Facebook group won’t help too much with this – even if you got 500 more people in your group, that would still end up being maybe 4-5 people total watching your videos.

The point is that you need a better way to get people to your live sales rather than relying solely on Facebook.

There are at least 3 additional tools you can use to help:

  • Facebook Messenger
  • Email
  • Text messages

These are simple tools at your disposal that can significantly increase the chances of getting more people at your live sales – and thus, getting more sales.

We’ll discuss each of these in more detail in future posts, but here are a few simple tips for each one.

Facebook Messenger

Most if not all of your customers are on Facebook (and they need to be on Facebook in order to view your video).

Send out Messenger reminders to your top customers to remind them when you go live, including a link to the group/page where your video will be hosted.

You can use Messenger’s “forward” feature to help with this – Once you send the message to 1 person, you can press and hold your finger on the bubble of the message you sent and select the “forward” option. This will let you send the same message to multiple people quickly and easily.

Email

This is one of the less effective methods, but it doesn’t hurt to send email reminders about your live sales to your customers as well.

Email is less intrusive that Messenger or texting, so you don’t have to be as concerned with bugging people too much.

Text Messages

Text messages are highly effective (even more than Messenger) because pretty much everyone reads all of their texts!

Text reminders will be the most likely to be seen by your customers.

Now, it may get tedious to send out individual texts (you certainly don’t want to do a group message), and you may be hesitant to have customers knowing your personal phone number.

So you may consider using a text alert services such as ours at Mobile-Text-Alerts.com, which will allow you to send out mass text reminders quickly and easily.

So how are your live sales going? Our challenge would be to take one of these methods and get started with using it for reminders this week. Then see how it helps your live sale viewership!

When You’re Just Starting Out with Live Facebook Sales…

If you’re a newbie to live Facebook sales, don’t get overwhelmed! It’s not as scary as it seems.

In addition to all the tips we’ve provided in other posts, here are a few things you can do to help get a good turnout.

Invite people individually

When you’re first starting out as a consultant, you have an excellent “excuse” to reach out to your friends and family and get them to watch your live sales.

Invite them via text message, Facebook Messenger, or even in person. Let them know you’ve started doing live sales for your business and you’d love for them to check out your video and comment or share.

(You can even offer an opportunity to be entered for a free piece of jewelry for any commenters or sharers.)

Invite at least 100 people

You want to shoot for messaging at least 100 people.

100 people may seem like a large amount but only a fraction of these people will actually show up to your live sale so you’ll need to aim high if you want a good turnout.

And Facebook Messenger actually makes it quite easy to send messages to a large number of people by using their “Forward” feature. If you’re on your smartphone, you can utilize this feature by sending your invitation message out to a single person, then hold your thumb on your message bubble and select the “Forward” option that comes up.

This will allow you to send the same message to a large number of people individually without having to open individual messaging windows for each one.

Follow up

Keep track of the people you’re sending the invitation messages to so that you can follow up to remind them.

Note that it’s totally normal for people to ignore your initial invitation message, so don’t take it personally and don’t be afraid about following up (unless they clearly said they weren’t interested).

Here’s a suggested pattern you could follow: Send the initial invitation message 5-7 days before your live sale, then a follow-up message 3 days after that. Then for anyone who replied “yes” to your invitation or who didn’t respond, send them the link to your live video when you actually go live.

Some people will say “no” to your invitation but don’t let that discourage you – They aren’t rejecting you as a person; they just aren’t interested in participating!

With these tips in hand, get out there and get going on your live sales! The only way to get it done is to just do it. 🙂

Find Your Own Groove for Your Live Sale Format

We’ve discussed some tips on how to conduct your live Facebook sales, but what should the layout and format of your live sale be?

What does a live sale look like?

Really, there’s no set rule for how a live sale should go.

Often people will incorporate some kind of game into their live sale presentation – Some options for that format might be:

  • A game, then an inventory presentation, then another game
  • Incorporating an inventory presentation through a game
  • An inventory presentation first, then a game

But you should find your own groove and do whatever works for you and your audience!

You can experiment around and find what your audience responds to and what fits your personality and preferences.

Here are some ideas to get started:

  • Watch other consultants to get ideas
    • If you feel like you’re copying them too much, you can send over a message to ask their permission to use their ideas
  • Do “game show style” games or trivia
  • Make it your own – Ask, “What will make my live sales different from other consultants’?”
  • Think about what kinds of activities you would enjoy doing if you were throwing a party with your friends
  • When going through your inventory, don’t just blandly state what the items are but show your enthusiasm about the products
  • Have an idea ahead of time about what your plan will be – If you have too much “down time” in your live videos trying to decide what to do you may lose viewers
  • Go as long as you’d like (generally the longer, the better)
    • Use the time to go through your entire available inventory, and then possibly go through it again

Hopefully these tips help give you a starting point for doing or improving your live sales! Now you just have to get out there and do. 🙂

4 Ways to Be More Enthusiastic During Live Facebook Sales

In order for your live Facebook sales to be as successful as possible, you want to be enthusiastic.

That does not mean that you fake enthusiasm or act like someone you’re not. But you don’t want to come across as bored or uninterested in what you’re doing.

For some people enthusiasm doesn’t necessarily come naturally, so here are some tips on how to inject more enthusiasm into your live Facebook sales.

1. Open your eyes more

Some people are naturally prone to squint or droop their eyes.

This can make you seem tired or unexcited, even if you actually are feeling energetic.

If you’re one of these people, you may want to be a bit more conscientious of widening your eyes slightly when doing your live videos. (Just don’t go overboard because there is a such thing as too much eye-widening!)

2. Re-watch your videos

One way to help improve your presentation is to re-watch your videos later on.

This can be painful – most people don’t enjoy watching themselves and seeing how they can improve.

But this can help you notice areas in which you can do better (as well as areas that you’re already doing well).

3. Fuel your body before going live

You may need to eat a snack or drink a cup of coffee before doing your live video.

A boost of carbs or caffeine may be just the thing to inject a spring in your step so that you can be excited for your live video.

4. Be genuinely excited

If you’re just trying to put on a front of fake excitement, people will probably sense that.

You should be genuinely excited about your jewelry and your business if you want your customers to be excited as well.

There will always be ups and downs in your business and some days you just may not be feeling it. But overall, you should feel truly enthusiastic about selling your jewelry. (If your overall attitude isn’t one of excitement about your business, your product, and your customers, then you may need to do some self-evaluation about whether doing this business is the right decision for you.)

5 More Tips on How to Conduct Your Live Facebook Sales

We’ve already discussed 5 tips on how to conduct your live Facebook sales.

Here are some more tips to help you have the most successful live sales!

6. Don’t get flustered

When it comes to live videos, it’s important to be able to go with the flow.

Due to the nature of live videos, they do not always go perfectly.

You can experience unexpected technical difficulties, or get tongue-tied, or your kids may run in and start fighting.

That’s okay – Just go with it. Be willing to laugh at yourself. People can relate to these imperfections.

7. Ask people to like and comment

You want to get as many comments and interactions in your video as you can.

One way to get some easy interaction is to tell people, “Please like this video and comment #live if you’re watching this live, or comment #replay if you’re watching the replay.”

You can mention these instructions a few different times during your video.

8. Ask people to share the video

People sharing your video is a great way to get exposure to new potential customers.

Now sometimes people will share just if you ask, but more often than not you may need to provide some kind of incentive.

You could say something like, “Anyone who shares this video will get entered into a drawing for a free bracelet” and then do a drawing once every week or every few weeks for all the people who shared your live videos.

9. Try to get the audience involved

Engage and interact with the people on your video. When you see their comments come in, respond to them verbally.

If there haven’t been a lot of comments or interaction for a while, you could ask some small talk questions such as, “We’re thinking of going on vacation next week – Any recommendations on where to go?”

10. Invite people to your VIP group

During your video, mention your VIP group – explain the benefits and invite people to join.

After your video, follow up with people who joined your video and ask them to join your VIP group. You can tell them, “Thanks for checking out my live! Can I get you to join my VIP group?”

Hopefully these tips help you get the most out of your live Facebook sales! For your next live sale, try to pick 1-2 of these tips to focus on, and start improving your live videos.

5 Tips on How to Conduct Your Live Facebook Sales

If you haven’t done a lot of live Facebook sales, the thought of doing them may seem daunting.

Where do you start? How do you do them? What are some best practices?

Even if you are used to doing live sales, you’re probably always looking for ways to improve and do them better.

So here are 5 tips on how to conduct your live Facebook sales.

1. Include a good description

You want a description for your live video that gets people to stop scrolling and watch.

Say something engaging – Some people will even say, “Stop scrolling!”

Put emojis, include some of your story, say something about “Beautiful jewelry, only $5!”

2. Have an assistant (if possible)

Although this is not necessary, it can be helpful to have an assistant – maybe your spouse, another family member, or a friend.

This second set of eyes can keep an eye on the comments for you so that you don’t miss any interactions.

3. Get right into it

One mistake many people make is to start off their live videos by saying, “I’m going to wait a bit for people to get on.”

We don’t recommend this, especially because many (if not most) of your viewers will be watching on a replay. If you begin your video by saying you’re going to wait before actually starting, many people may lose interest and keep scrolling.

Instead, get right into things.

It’s true that you may want to wait a bit before getting into the meat of your live sale. But instead of passing the time by telling people you’re going to wait, you can pass the time by introducing yourself, getting a little bit into your story, and/or engaging with the audience that is already watching.

4. Smile

Not much more needs to be said about this point, but just make sure you remember to smile – don’t let your nerves get the best of you and prevent you from coming across as friendly and inviting.

5. Welcome people as they join

When you do live videos, Facebook will show you when a new person is watching.

Once you see their name come up on your screen, go ahead and give them a shout out to welcome them.

Say something like, “Hi, Rachel! Thanks for joining!”

When people are directly addressed in the video it can make them feel welcome and can also encourage participation as they will often comment back in response to your greeting.

This 1 Thing Is All You Need for Live Sales (and You Already Have It!)

You may believe that in order to run a professional live sale on Facebook, you need to have some fancy equipment and/or be really tech-savvy.

If that’s something that has crossed your mind before, here’s some encouragement for you: it’s not true.

In fact, the only piece of equipment you need in order to do a live sale is something you most likely already have – a smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera.

That’s it! Really.

You can just prop up your phone against something (could be anything: a cup, a piece of furniture, a wall) and make sure that you and your inventory are in good view of the camera.

Now, once you get your business going and growing, it may make sense to invest in some more equipment. Here are some items you can consider adding:

  • A tripod – this enables you to not have to prop up your phone, which can make the process a little easier for you
  • A microphone – this can help your lives have better sound, which can make a better experience for your audience
  • Lighting products – these can brighten up your video, which can make it more attractive, particularly if you go live in a dark area or at night

All of these items can be fairly inexpensive – they won’t break your bank. But even so, they are not necessary, especially when first starting out.

If you have a smartphone (or a tablet or computer), you have all you need. So don’t let a concern about a lack of professional equipment hold you back.

Go ahead and run your live sale today!

How to Present Yourself During a Live Facebook Sale

Although you may understand that you need to be doing live Facebook sales, one concern you may have is how to make them look professional.

You may be worried about your video not going as planned, or about being overweight, or about saying something foolish, or about your house not looking put together.

Our advice would be not to wait until you have everything all figured out before you do your live videos. Live videos aren’t necessarily meant to be perfect and professional – in fact, as we’ve mentioned before, people may appreciate seeing something that’s real, not fake perfection.

That being said, here are a few tips on how to present yourself during a live sale.

  • Don’t be overly concerned with what you wear – generally speaking, wear something that’s somewhat nice (at least, nicer than sweatpants or pajamas), but there’s no need to dress up.
  • If you normally wear makeup in public, consider putting on a little before your video, but don’t overdo it.
  • Check if your hair is unruly and maybe run a brush through it if needed, but again, it doesn’t have to be perfect.
  • It may be a good idea to put on some nail polish, particularly if you’re going to be showcasing rings and bracelets.
  • Think of it as kind of like going on a date – You don’t want to pretend to be something you’re not, but you also want to be respectful of your viewers and show them that you care by the way you present yourself.

And if any of these suggestions gives you anxiety to the point that you’re putting off doing your live sales, forget all of this and just do it. It’s better to do a live sale in your sweatpants, or with messy hair, or with a cluttered house, than to not do them at all.

How Often Should You Do a Live Sale on Facebook?

So you understand the importance of going live, and you understand about going live on your public business page rather than your VIP group.

But how often should you do live sales? And when should you do them?

Circumstances may vary, but generally our advice would be that the more, the better – It is better to do too many live sales than not enough.

Even if your live sale only makes $20 (or makes nothing), it can still be worth it. It may gain you a future loyal customer who will make future purchases, and/or your live sale may boost engagement in your business page and VIP group.

More important than how many times you go live in a given week or month is that you go live consistently.

You could maybe start at twice per week – say, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Try to get a schedule going and stick to it as much as you can.

If you’re always going live on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8pm, your audience will start to expect that. They won’t have to guess at when they can catch you live.

However, the times that work best for going live may vary depending on your audience.

For example, if your customer base consists primarily of young moms, then later in the evening may work better, after they’ve had a chance to put their kids to bed.

On the other hand, if your customer base is primarily elderly people, an earlier time may work better.

Try to get some feedback from your audience of what days and times work for them – You can ask around or do a poll.

You may have to spend some time experimenting until you get into a good groove.

The key is to just do it and do it regularly – You don’t have to have everything all figured out before getting started.

Be smart, yes, and plan ahead as you’re able, but don’t worry too much about when and how often to do it. If you keep at it, you’ll find a rhythm that works for you and your audience!
